Debate on Territorial Jurisdiction of Checkposts on Ghat Sections Crops Up

A debate on the territorial jurisdiction of checkposts has cropped up in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. The district administration has put up two checkposts at the Kallar bridge and close to the Forest College and Research Institute in Coimbatore district. According to officials, the Nilgiris district jurisdiction begins from the Burliar Bridge which falls outside the purview of the current checkposts. This has caused traffic hold-ups and raised concerns among visitors and local residents. The Coimbatore police and revenue departments must take measures to change the locations of the checkposts. The checkposts have come up after the recent Madras High Court directive to the state government to take strict measures to curb single-use plastics in the Nilgiris. The court had censured the government for not implementing the ban on use of single-use plastics in the Nilgiris district.
