Siddaramaiah, the Chief Minister of Karnataka, has directed state authorities to track down the source(s) of fake news campaigns on social media, identify those involved, and initiate legal action against them. The directive follows the CM’s discussions with home minister G Parameshwara on the issue. According to the CM’s office, Siddaramaiah has instructed the cyber cell of Bengaluru police to submit monthly reports on the matter. The CM said the menace had become rampant since Congress assumed office in the state. In 2013, the CMO had alleged that the fake news menace had increased. ‘Previously, they tried to create unrest by spreading false news about child lifters, beef transporters.’ TNN
