Akasa Orders Four More Aircraft to Support International Expansion

India’s youngest emerging airline, Akasa, announced the purchase of four more Boeing 737-8 aircraft at the Paris Air Show. With this addition, Akasa’s initial order of 72 aircraft now totals 76. The airline plans to use these aircraft to support its international expansion. Akasa is also in the process of finalizing a significant three-digit aircraft order, which is expected to be announced before the end of the year.

Founded by Vinay Dube, Akasa has gained attention in the aviation industry since its launch last August. Backed by late billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, the airline aims to make a mark in the Indian aviation market. Akasa currently operates 19 aircraft and expects to add its 20th aircraft next month, enabling it to fly abroad. The airline’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its focus on fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions. As Dube explained, the B737-8 aircraft not only allows for sustainable operations but also enhances the comfort of environmentally conscious passengers.

Boeing, the manufacturer of the B737-8, expressed excitement about Akasa’s follow-on order. Brad McMullen, Boeing’s senior VP of commercial sales and marketing, highlighted the aircraft’s efficiency and range, which align with Akasa’s plans to expand its domestic and regional networks. With India being one of the world’s fastest-growing commercial aviation markets, this order serves as evidence of the B737 MAX’s capabilities in the region.
