Meta Platforms’ Oversight Board has urged Facebook to review and assess its efforts in preventing the promotion of political violence on its platforms. The request comes after Meta allowed a video calling for violence following the 2022 Brazilian election to remain online. The board expressed concerns about the efficacy of Meta’s election integrity initiatives due to this decision. While the Oversight Board’s recommendations do not have to be followed by Meta, it serves as a significant call to action for the company to strengthen its election preparedness. Both Facebook and Instagram, owned by Meta, have previously been utilized to spread misinformation and incite violence. In 2020, these platforms were found to have been exploited by certain Russian groups to influence U.S. voters during the 2016 elections. Former U.S. President Donald Trump was suspended from these platforms in 2021 following the Capitol Hill riot, with Meta determining that he had incited violence. However, Trump was reinstated earlier this year. In response to the board’s request, Meta stated that it currently lacks defined metrics for measuring the success of its election integrity efforts. The Meta Oversight Board, established in 2020, reviews decisions made by Facebook and Instagram regarding the removal or preservation of specific content and makes rulings on whether the social media company’s actions should be upheld or overturned.
