The UP government has amended the syllabus for classes 9-12 of state-board affiliated schools to include biographies of Hindutva ideologue VD Savarkar, RSS and Bhartiya Jan Sangh leader Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya among 50 Indian personalities. The move aims to acquaint students with the lives of freedom fighters, revolutionaries, social reformers, and other important figures in Indian history. The directive came from CM Yogi Adityanath, and a list of names was sent by subject experts for government approval. The biographies will be part of subjects like moral science, physical education, and yoga, and will be implemented from July. Clearing the subjects containing these biographies will be mandatory, but their marks will not be added to the marksheets of classes 10 and 12. The list of personalities also includes Congress leaders like Lal Bahadur Shastri, Sarojini Naidu, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, and others who contributed to India’s independence movement. Savarkar’s biography will be taught to class 9 students, while Upadhyaya’s biography will be taught to class 11 students. The new curriculum in UP will provide students an opportunity to learn about the contributions and sacrifices made by these eminent personalities in shaping India’s history and development.
