Union home minister Amit Shah laid the foundation of the Balidan Stambh (Martyr’s Memorial) in Srinagar on Saturday. The memorial, located at Pratap Park near Lal Chowk, is dedicated to honoring the sacrifices made by the security forces. Accompanied by J&K lieutenant-governor Manoj Sinha, Shah visited Baltal earlier in the day to review preparations for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. On the final day of his two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Shah distributed appointment letters to the next of kin of eight J&K police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty. The event took place at the Police Golf Course, which offers a picturesque view of Srinagar’s Dal Lake. Shah expressed his appreciation for the J&K police personnel’s sacrifice in a tweet, stating, “The martyrdom of numerous Jawans of the Jammu and Kashmir Police who laid down their lives battling terrorists and securing innocent fellow citizens is a testament to what Kashmir and its people stand for.”
