Odisha has been witnessing heavy showers for the past 24 hours, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an Orange warning to 13 districts in the state for the next 24 hours. The IMD has attributed the heavy rainfall to the formation of a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal. Umashankar Das, a scientist at the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre of the IMD, stated that the state will face the maximum impact of the low-pressure area for the next 48 hours. Sambalpur district has recorded the highest rainfall in the state, with 171.4 mm in the last 24 hours. The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in the districts of Sambalpur, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Bargarh, Deogarh, Bolangir, Sundergarh, Keonjhar, and Jharsuguda, with extremely heavy rainfall in some places. The IMD has also warned of temporary water logging in low-lying areas, poor visibility, and traffic congestion in urban areas. People have been advised to avoid staying in vulnerable kutchha houses, as there is a chance of possible damage to roads and wall collapse. The IMD has urged precautionary measures such as drainage arrangements and regulation of mining activity during heavy rain.
