Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Sunday criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Chief Minister N Biren Singh over their alleged silence, ineffectiveness, and non-functionality in handling the violence-hit situation in Manipur. Addressing a national convention on peace in Manipur, Ramesh stated that while the state is ‘burning’, the central government is not taking appropriate action. He demanded the immediate replacement of the Chief Minister and emphasized the need to disarm all armed groups without discrimination. Ramesh also stressed upon creating an atmosphere of trust, harmony, and reconciliation in the region.
Ramesh made these remarks at a national convention on peace in Manipur, which saw the participation of leaders from various political parties. He highlighted the importance of consensus and sensitivity in restoring trust in the region. Ramesh acknowledged that the process of restoring normalcy in Manipur will be time-consuming but stressed on the urgent need to take steps in that direction.
The Congress leader also criticized the chief minister’s performance and urged for his immediate replacement. He mentioned that the restoration of order took a significant amount of time even during the tenure of former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh. Ramesh expressed hope for the early restoration of peace and unity in Manipur, which was once an example of diversity and unity in India.
Ramesh’s remarks came after the Congress party presented an eight-point charter of demands at an all-party meeting convened by Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament. The demands were put forward by former Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh, who criticized the current chief minister and urged for his replacement. He also expressed dissatisfaction over not being given enough time to present his views during the meeting.
The violence in Manipur has resulted in the loss of nearly 120 lives and left over 3,000 people injured since May 3. The clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities have also led to the destruction of numerous houses, leaving many people homeless.
