Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek Top Seeds for Wimbledon

Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek have been named the top seeds for the upcoming Wimbledon tournament. The decision was announced on Wednesday by the All England Club, who adhered to the ATP and WTA rankings. Alcaraz recently overtook four-time defending champion Novak Djokovic as the top-ranked player in the men’s standings. This change in rankings was expected, given Djokovic’s absence from the courts since his victory at the French Open two weeks ago. In the women’s singles, Iga Swiatek retained her position as the No. 1 seed. Swiatek has been ranked at the top since April 2022 and is a four-time Grand Slam winner. She recently secured the French Open title. Despite her success in other Grand Slam events, Swiatek has not advanced beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Novak Djokovic, who has won the Wimbledon championship seven times in total and the past four times it was held, dropped to No. 2 after his ranking points were withheld in 2022. Last year, the ATP and WTA did not allocate any points in protest against the All England Club’s decision to ban players from Russia and Belarus due to the invasion of Ukraine. However, this year, Russian player Daniil Medvedev has been seeded third, and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka is the second seed in the women’s field.

The seeding announcement sets the stage for the main draw, which will take place on Friday. The tournament is set to begin on Monday. Other notable men’s seeds include Casper Ruud at No. 4, followed by Stefanos Tsitsipas, Holger Rune, Jannik Sinner, Taylor Fritz, and Frances Tiafoe. Nick Kyrgios, last year’s runner-up to Djokovic at Wimbledon, is seeded 31st. Meanwhile, two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray is ranked 39th but is not seeded.

Among the women’s seeds, Elena Rybakina, the defending champion from 2022, is ranked third. She is followed by Jessica Pegula, Caroline Garcia, Ons Jabeur, Coco Gauff, Maria Sakkari, Petra Kvitova, and Barbora Krejcikova. The All England Club previously used a formula based on grass results to determine seedings but has transitioned to following the rankings since 2019.

The announcement of the top seeds for Wimbledon has set the stage for an exciting tournament, with Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek leading the way.
