Meta Oversight Board Recommends Suspension of Cambodian PM Hun Sen’s Account for Violent Language

A quasi-independent review board has recommended the suspension of Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen’s Facebook and Instagram accounts for six months due to the use of language that could incite violence. The ruling was issued by Meta’s Oversight Board, which overturned a decision by Facebook’s moderators to allow a video on Hun Sen’s Facebook page to stand. In the video, Hun Sen decried opposition politicians who accused his ruling party of stealing votes and made threats of legal action and physical violence against them. The board cited Hun Sen’s history of human rights violations and intimidation of political opponents as additional reasons for the suspension. Meta is expected to respond to the recommendation within 60 days. Hun Sen, who is a devoted user of Facebook, announced that he will no longer upload to the platform and will rely on the Telegram app to spread his message. Critics have raised concerns about political leaders using social media to incite violence, and this recommendation from Meta’s Oversight Board is seen as a step towards holding them accountable for their actions.
