A bus in western India crashed and caught fire, resulting in the death of at least 25 people and leaving 8 others injured. According to local police, the accident occurred when the bus lost control and collided with a road divider after a tyre blowout. The incident took place in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra state on the Samruddhi Mahamarg expressway. Most of the fatalities were attributed to the ensuing fire. Reckless driving, poorly maintained roads, and aging vehicles contribute to a high number of deadly road accidents in India. Police data indicates that over 110,000 people lose their lives annually in such accidents across the country. Maharashtra’s deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the victims’ families would receive financial support of 700,000 Indian rupees ($8,500) each. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed their condolences and assured assistance to the affected families. They also highlighted the need for the injured to recover quickly.
