Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev to Hunger Strike Against Election Commission’s Delimitation Draft

Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev has announced that she will be going on a hunger strike in protest against the Election Commission of India’s Delimitation draft in Silchar, Assam. The hunger strike, which will last for 10 hours, is scheduled to begin at 9am on Monday. Dev, who is a member of the Trinamool Congress, will be accompanied by fellow party members during the strike. The opposition parties in Assam have expressed their opposition to the draft delimitation proposal. Eleven political parties have requested the Election Commission to clarify why the 2011 census data for Assam have not been used in the delimitation process, as the 2001 census data have been used instead. These parties have also alleged that the State Government of Assam has manipulated the delimitation process in favor of the ruling party. The opposition parties have also stated that the delimitation process should be put on hold until the Supreme Court gives its final order on the matter. The Election Commission of India has invited suggestions and objections regarding the draft delimitation proposal till July 11, 2023.
