A 23-year-old individual named Rakesh working at a cost accounting firm in Goregaon, Mumbai, recently experienced a heart attack. Rakesh initially didn’t consider the tightness in his chest a symptom of a heart attack. However, a few hours later, he collapsed in agonizing pain. Fortunately, Rakesh received laser angioplasty at L H Hiranandani Hospital in Powai. The procedure successfully vaporized the blockage in his artery. Rakesh’s case highlights the benefits of laser angioplasty, as he didn’t require a stent, and the treatment proves particularly advantageous for young patients like him. Laser angioplasty has gradually gained acceptance in Mumbai, with several hospitals utilizing this advanced technique in complex cases. Cardiologists view laser angioplasty as a facilitator that simplifies the procedure and enhances patient outcomes. Despite its growing popularity, laser angioplasty is not a substitute for standard techniques such as balloon angioplasty and stenting. It is primarily reserved for complex cases or patients who develop restenosis or have problematic blockages. Laser angioplasty is available in 19 hospitals nationwide, with active usage in only a few centers in Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai. While laser angioplasty has been available for decades, increased interest has emerged in India due to the rising incidence of heart attacks among individuals under the age of 40. In Rakesh’s case, the laser proved effective in breaking down a thick clot that was resistant to standard guidewire penetration. The high cost of laser treatment, ranging from Rs 1.5 to 2.5 lakh, can be a deterrent, but it offers an alternative for young patients with heart attacks. However, for older patients, laser angioplasty alone may not be sufficient. Rakesh, now recovering and determined to quit smoking, serves as a reminder of the importance of heart health, especially among younger individuals.
