Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Miya remarks: Rajya Sabha member files police complaint, Assam TMC writes to CJI

An Independent Rajya Sabha member lodged a police complaint against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that he made a hate speech against the ‘Miya’ community. The Trinamool Congress has written to the Chief Justice of India seeking judicial action against Sarma for the same remark. The ‘Miya’ community comprises Bengali-speaking Muslims in Assam. Sarma had remarked that the high prices of vegetables in Guwahati were due to Miya vendors charging more. He added that clearing footpaths in Guwahati should encourage Assamese people to start their businesses. AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal expressed that the Miya community was hurt by Sarma’s comment. Opposition parties accused the BJP and AIUDF of colluding in communal politics. The Independent Rajya Sabha MP’s police complaint alleges hate speeches by constitutional functionaries that promote division and prejudice national integration. The complaint also highlights other ministers and MLAs reiterating Sarma’s statement. Referring to a recent Supreme Court direction regarding hate speeches, the MP called for action under the Indian Penal Code against Sarma. Dispur police have received the complaint but are yet to register an FIR. Assam TMC President, in a letter to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, urged action against Sarma for his hate speech, citing the potential to incite communal hatred. The TMC argued that the Assam government should have taken steps to register a case in this regard.
