India to Raise Concerns on Non-Tariff Barriers on All Platforms

India is proactively using various multilateral and bilateral platforms, including the G20, to address concerns related to non-tariff barriers (NTBs) affecting international trade. The Indian government has expressed concerns over policies such as the European Union’s (EU) carbon tax on multiple platforms, including the World Trade Organization (WTO). The issue of NTBs imposed by G20 member countries is expected to dominate discussions at the trade ministers’ meeting scheduled to take place in Jaipur next week.

According to Sunil Barthwal, the commerce secretary, India is actively engaging in discussions regarding NTBs and exploring ways to find an effective solution. The objective is to establish a platform that facilitates coordination among concerned countries, helping them better understand and address such barriers. With the two-day Trade and Investment Ministerial Meeting approaching on August 24 and 25 in Jaipur, this issue will gain significant attention.

A report by the Global Trade Research Initiative has highlighted the urgency for India to take swift action in eliminating NTBs. These non-tariff barriers hamper trade by restricting the free flow of goods and services through measures such as import quotas, technical regulations, subsidies, and unfair customs procedures. India’s commitment to addressing this issue ensures its active involvement in platforms like the G20 to foster global trade cooperation and create a conducive environment for economic growth and development.
