The approach of digital public infrastructure (DPI) can extend beyond its global prominence in the area of climate adaptation and mitigation, according to Nandan Nilekani, Chairman and Co-founder of Infosys and founding chairman of UIDAI. Speaking at the B20 summit, Nilekani emphasized India’s success in finding a balance between responsible regulation and innovation through its participatory model. He showcased the accelerated inclusion achieved through India’s DPI, which is now gaining international recognition. Nilekani also revealed plans to take the model to 50 countries in the next five years, with various multilateral agencies and global groups expressing interest. He further expressed the potential of DPI in climate adaptation and anticipatory financing for building more resilient homes. By leveraging DPI or ONDC, Nilekani believes it is possible to provide anticipatory financing for climate adaptation measures such as constructing homes that can withstand higher sea levels. The next few years are expected to witness the proliferation and prevalence of digital infrastructure at a population-scale worldwide.
