The Privileges Committee of Lok Sabha, chaired by BJP member Sunil Kumar Singh, has unanimously adopted a resolution to revoke the suspension of Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from the lower house. The resolution was passed after Chowdhury appeared before the Committee and expressed regret over certain remarks made by him in the House.
Chowdhury, during his appearance before the Committee, stated that it was never his intention to hurt anybody’s feelings and expressed regret for the remarks made by him. He assured the Committee that he would be cautious and mindful of his words in the future.
A member of the Committee stated, “The Committee has adopted a resolution to revoke the suspension of Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from the Lok Sabha. The resolution will be sent to the Speaker as soon as possible.”
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was suspended from the Lok Sabha by Speaker Om Birla for “unruly conduct” on August 11, the last day of the monsoon session. The suspension was pending a report from the Privileges Committee.
At the Committee meeting held on August 18, several members expressed the view that Chowdhury had already been punished for his conduct by the Lok Sabha, and further examination of his behavior by a parliamentary panel was unnecessary. However, as a matter of natural justice, the Committee requested Chowdhury to appear before it on Wednesday.
