Expressing disagreement with the statement of DMK leader A Raja on Sanatan Dharma, Congress on Thursday reiterated that it believes in “sarv dharma sambhav”, and the idea of equal respect for all religions went back in party history right to the time of the freedom struggle. Holding nationwide marches on the first anniversary of Bharat Jodo Yatra, Congress said the march was to promote harmony.

“No one can treat any particular faith as less than the other faith,” party spokesman Pawan Khera said, adding, “Neither the Constitution allows this, nor the Congress believes in any of these comments.”

Asked if Congress had broached the subject with ally DMK, the spokesman said there was no need because “we know for a fact that each one of our constituents also respects every religion”.

“Now if they want to twist anybody’s remarks, they are free to do so. If it suits the PM, let him twist those remarks, but every single member of the INDIA group has immense respect for all faiths, communities, beliefs and religions,” he said.

Meanwhile, Congress held marches in all districts across the country to observe the first anniversary of Bharat Jodo Yatra. The party said the Rahul Gandhi-led march had achieved its objective of promoting harmony.
