Father Nicholas Dias, the secretary for the liturgy commission for the Delhi Archdiocese, recently met US President Joe Biden during a holy communion service in New Delhi. Describing Biden as a very humble person, Father Dias also mentioned that the US president’s grandmother had a significant influence on his life. During their conversation, they discussed faith, Goa, and the origin of Christianity in India. Father Dias prayed for the success of the G20 summit and expressed his gratitude for Biden’s time and the influence of Christianity on Biden’s life. The priest also introduced Biden to a traditional Goan delicacy called Bebinca. Before their meeting concluded, Biden gave Father Dias a souvenir – the President’s Seal No 261. In addition, Father Dias mentioned the relics of St. Francis Xavier in Old Goa and the upcoming decennial exposition in the coastal state. He also shared that St. Francis Xavier was the inspiration behind his vocation as a priest. Father Dias discussed his closeness to two saints, Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II, and recalled being present with the Pope during the release of the ‘Ecclesia de Asia’ document in New Delhi. Overall, the meeting between Father Dias and President Biden was filled with mutual respect and appreciation for each other’s faith and heritage.
