Teams from the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, are set to arrive in Kerala to address the Nipah outbreak. They will establish a mobile laboratory at Kozhikode Medical College to conduct Nipah testing and survey bats in the area. This comes after four cases of Nipah infection were confirmed in Kozhikode district. The State Health Minister, Veena George, revealed that the virus strain found in Kerala is the Bangladesh variant, which spreads from human to human and has a high mortality rate. However, it is less contagious. A team of epidemiologists from Chennai will also take part in the survey. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has agreed to provide the necessary monoclonal antibodies for Nipah treatment. Various preventive measures have been implemented, including surveillance, contact tracing, categorization of risk levels, and the establishment of isolation facilities. Additionally, certain panchayats in Kozhikode district have been designated as containment zones. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has urged the public not to panic but to adhere to the instructions provided by the health department and the police. A nine-year-old boy is among those infected with the virus, and his father’s death is now being attributed to Nipah. The situation is being closely monitored, and the government is taking significant steps to control the spread of the virus.
