Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has stated that if his party comes to power in 2024, they will amend the women’s reservation bill and include a quota for women from Other Backward Classes (OBC). He also accused the Narendra Modi government of delaying the implementation of the bill for 10 years. While supporting the bill in Parliament, the Congress demanded immediate implementation and inclusion of OBC women in the reservation. Kharge made these announcements during a party rally in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The Constitution (128th Amendment) Bill, which aims to reserve a third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women, was recently passed by Parliament. However, Kharge alleged that the then president Ram Nath Kovind was not invited for the foundation laying of the new Parliament building, citing his untouchable caste as the reason. He also criticized the exclusion of President Droupadi Murmu from the inauguration while many others, including actors, were invited. Kharge questioned the motives behind bringing the women’s reservation bill, stating that the BJP does not want to give reservation to women. He also highlighted the historical representation of women in Congress and criticized the BJP’s treatment of its women leaders. Kharge urged the public to vote for Congress to protect the Constitution and democracy. In response, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate expressed the party’s support for the women’s reservation bill but hoped that it would not become another empty promise by the BJP. She also alleged that the BJP brought the bill hastily due to fear of defeat by the opposition INDIA bloc. Shrinate further claimed that the wait for reservation for women may last until 2039.
