K.C. Vasanthi Vijayan, a member of the United Democratic Front (UDF), has been elected as the president of Mavoor grama panchayat in Kozhikode. The election took place as part of an understanding between the alliance partners in the UDF. Prior to Vijayan, a member of the Indian Union Muslim League held the presidency for the first one-and-a-half years, followed by a member of the Revolutionary Marxist Party of India. Vijayan, belonging to the Congress and representing Ward 11, will hold the position until the end of the council’s current tenure. In the recent election, she defeated A.P. Mohandas of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) by receiving nine votes compared to his seven votes. With 10 members, the UDF had the majority in the 18-member grama panchayat, while the LDF had eight members. However, the UDF now has nine members after the death of A.P. Abdul Kareem, who represented Ward 13. The LDF, on the other hand, has seven members after the expulsion of K. Unnikrishnan, an Independent member.
