DGCA States No Power to Mediate in Akasa Pilots’ Feud

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has stated in the Delhi high court that it has no power or authority to intervene in the ongoing feud between pilots and Akasa Air. Akasa Air has accused DGCA of being unwilling to take action against pilots who resigned without serving the notice period, and has claimed to be facing significant financial and operational hardships. In response, DGCA has mentioned that it would be beneficial for Akasa Air to comply with the aviation regulator’s mandate, which recommends maintaining a limited flight schedule if there is a shortage of pilots. DGCA responded to Akasa Air’s plea, stating that it does not have the delegated authority to interfere in employment contracts or decisions related to airport or airline operators. The regulator also denied receiving any documents or reasons from Akasa Air regarding the cancellation of approximately 600 flights since June due to pilot resignations. DGCA emphasized its commitment to ensuring minimal inconvenience for passengers in the event of flight disruptions and protecting the rights of air travelers. The court has reserved its decision on Akasa Air’s plea, which seeks coercive action against the pilots for their alleged irresponsible behavior.
