Small Tea Growers Seek Cooperation and Support from Organized Sectors and Government

The National Small Tea Grower’s Conference 2023 was recently held in Guwahati, highlighting the significance of small tea growers (STGs) in the Indian tea industry. Organized by Solidaridad and the Confederation of Indian Small Tea Growers’ Associations (CISTA), with the support of various small tea growers associations, the conference aimed to address the challenges and opportunities faced by STGs. Dr. Shatadru Chattopadhyay, Managing Director of Solidaridad Network Asia, emphasized the crucial role played by small tea growers and their contributions to the tea production landscape in India. The conference also focused on the challenges faced by STGs, such as the lack of support, knowledge, and resources to enhance their product quality. Bijoy Gopal Chakraborty, Chairman of CISTA, called for sustainable development and empowerment of STGs, while various small tea growers expressed their desire to produce better quality teas and the need for guidance and resources. The conference highlighted the urgent need for quality improvement in tea production to tackle oversupply, rising production costs, and supply-demand dynamics. It called for increased cooperation and support from organized sectors and government agencies to enhance the agricultural practices of small tea growers and ensure the long-term viability of the tea industry in India.
