Canada’s foreign minister Melanie Joly has confirmed a fourth Canadian death from last week’s attack by Hamas on Israel. The victim, 22-year-old Shir Georgy, was reported missing after the attack on a music festival near Kibbutz Re’im. Joly is now striving to evacuate citizens from both Gaza and the West Bank. So far, the death toll for Canadians stands at four, with three still missing. Joly is working on evacuating Canadians from Gaza through the Rafah border crossing into Egypt and from the West Bank by bus into Jordan.

Joly has expressed her concern about the volatile situation in Gaza, stating that it is currently one of the worst places on earth to live. Thousands of Palestinians have fled the north of the Gaza Strip in anticipation of an Israeli ground assault.

Canada had planned to evacuate approximately 40 families, or 160 people, on Saturday, but the crossing was closed due to violence. Joly will be discussing the situation with her Egyptian counterpart in order to find alternative evacuation options for these families. Canada also has an agreement with Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and Jordan to evacuate between 80-100 citizens from the West Bank, transporting them from Ramallah to Amman next week.

The attack by Hamas on Israeli towns last week, which resulted in the deaths of 1,300 people, has prompted Israel to promise retaliation and has intensified the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Israel has vowed to annihilate the Hamas militant group that controls Gaza.
