A man armed with a knife and crossbow drove his car into the Chinese consulate in San Francisco, eventually being shot and killed by the police. San Francisco police released footage of the attack, which showed the driver brandishing a knife after ramming his vehicle into the consulate’s visa section. The video also showed an officer entering the consulate after the driver, Zhanyuan Yang, crashed into the building. Consulate security had used pepper spray on the assailant before the officer confronted him. The footage captured the officer ordering Yang to get on the ground, but instead, Yang attacked the officer with a knife. The officer then shot and killed Yang to protect himself. Yang was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his wounds. Investigators found a folding knife with a 3.5-inch blade, two 40-caliber fire cartridge casings, and a loaded center point crossbow with arrows at the scene. The motive for the attack is still unknown and under investigation. The United States has expressed its willingness to cooperate with China and strongly condemned violence against diplomatic missions. San Francisco, a city with a large population of ethnic Chinese residents, has seen a wave of criticism against Beijing. While violence against diplomatic missions is rare in the United States, the Cuban embassy in Washington has been attacked twice in recent years.
