The Supreme Court of India has issued a directive to judges, stating that they should respect and follow the roaster system. According to the court, all judges should honor the roaster system, which assigns cases to judges in the highest court and high courts. The court also mentioned that judges should not entertain any petitions unless they are specifically assigned to them. Justices Abhay S. Oka and Pankaj Mithal argued that hearing cases not assigned to them is a violation of judicial discipline. The court recently passed an order in a civil writ petition filed by an accused in a case, challenging the order to club the case with an FIR and seek interim protection. The bench stated that the petitioner had filed a petition that falls under the purview of a criminal case, and the Chief Justice had assigned it to another bench for hearing. The bench also mentioned that allowing the petitioner to club the FIR in a civil writ petition is a gross abuse of the legal process. The court imposed a fine of INR 5,000 on the petitioner for the violation.
