Indian Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar has announced that the next major activity for the Navy will be a solo circumnavigation expedition by a woman officer. This comes after Commander Abhilash Tomy successfully completed the Golden Globe solo non-stop race around the world. Tomy has been roped in as a mentor of sailing for the Indian Navy, encouraging people, giving tips, and grooming them for such voyages. Admiral Kumar highlighted the challenges faced during such expeditions, mentioning bad weather, boat troubles, and the risk of drowning. He emphasized the need for professionalism and survival skills at sea.
Admiral Kumar also expressed his experience of monitoring Commander Tomy during his Golden Globe race, acknowledging the feeling of helplessness at times. He commended Tomy’s courage and ability to withstand pressures.
The announcement of a solo circumnavigation expedition by a woman officer showcases the Indian Navy’s commitment to gender equality and opportunities for women in the armed forces. Two officers are currently under training and will be sent to sea once they are deemed fit. The Navy chief addressed the perception that these navigations are not challenging, stating that life at sea demands constant alertness and a thorough professional mindset.
This expedition will not only test the physical and mental strength of the woman officer but will also inspire more women to pursue challenging and adventurous careers in the Indian Navy. The Indian Navy’s efforts to encourage and support such expeditions demonstrate its commitment to promoting diversity and empowering women officers within its ranks.
