Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has criticized India’s decision to abstain from voting on the recent UN general assembly resolution on the West Asia conflict. In a newspaper article, Gandhi expressed her disappointment with India’s abstention and argued that valuing the relationship with Israel should not disregard the displacement of Palestinians from their homeland. She emphasized the importance of justice in achieving peace in the region and stated that there can be no peace without justice.
Gandhi indirectly attacked the BJP, the ruling party in India, and clarified that the Congress party has always advocated for a two-state solution, which aligns with India’s historic position on the issue. She highlighted the fact that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) statement on October 12, which supported the Congress party’s stance, was issued only after Israel initiated its assault on Gaza. Gandhi criticized the Prime Minister for not mentioning Palestinian rights in the initial statement expressing solidarity with Israel.
The Congress leader also condemned the terrorist attack by Hamas but criticized Israel for seeking revenge from a population that is innocent and helpless. She called for the international community to support a ceasefire and emphasized the need for powerful voices to advocate for peace.
Gandhi concluded by stating that humanity is currently on trial and urged the global community to prioritize the wellbeing of innocent civilians in the ongoing conflict.
