The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Bengal unit has announced that it will not be inducting any top leaders from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This decision has been taken based on the lessons learned from the 2021 assembly polls. The party, however, has expressed its willingness to accept grassroots workers from both the Trinamool Congress and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) who have the best interests of the state at heart. The BJP aims to avoid repeating the mistakes made during the last elections, when several TMC leaders who joined the party were found to have criminal backgrounds. This move comes after senior TMC leaders, including Mukul Ray and Rajib Banerjee, switched to the BJP but later returned to their former party, resulting in a decrease in the number of BJP MLAs. The Trinamool Congress has emerged as the main opposition party in West Bengal after winning 77 seats in the assembly polls. BJP State President Sukanta Majumdar criticized the Trinamool Congress, accusing it of diverting attention from the arrest of its leaders by raising issues related to the welfare of the people and central schemes. Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh described the arrest of Jyoti Priya Mallick and others as “political vendetta”. Majumdar expressed doubts about how the Bengal government will function in the future, suggesting that it might have to run from either Tihar Jail or Presidency Jail. He emphasized that during such a constitutional crisis, the central government will make necessary decisions. The Trinamool Congress is planning to organize a movement against the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) from the first week of November.
