The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has submitted a chargesheet against Jet Airways (India) Ltd (JIL) founder Naresh Goyal, his wife, and others before the special court. The chargesheet follows an investigation into a Rs 538 crore loan that JIL took from Canara Bank. The special court has said it will consider the chargesheet on Wednesday.
Goyal, who is currently in jail custody, appeared before the court via video-conference and requested that his advocate be allowed to collect a copy of the chargesheet on his behalf.
State Bank of India, along with other consortium banks, has an overall outstanding exposure of approximately Rs 6,000 crore to the JIL group. Earlier, ED stated that it scrutinised hundreds of bank accounts in the name of Goyal and his family members, as well as the accounts of Jet Airways and its subsidiaries.
The ED has alleged that the loan taken by JIL was used for personal gains and needs and that properties were purchased abroad using the proceeds of the crime. Goyal claimed to have given power of attorney to Hasmukh Gardi, co-promoter of JIL, but the latter did not appear for a statement when summoned by the ED.
The ED has accused Goyal of cheating and misappropriation of loan money. It claims that he siphoned off funds to create personal assets.
