Tory MP Bob Stewart has been found guilty of a racially aggravated public order offence after telling activist Sayed Ahmed Alwadaei to ‘go back to Bahrain’ during a confrontation. Despite Stewart’s denial of any racist intent, chief magistrate Paul Goldspring emphasized that the guilty verdict stood. Stewart was fined £600 and ordered to pay £835 in legal costs. The activist has called for action from the Conservative Party, and pressure is mounting on Chancellor Rishi Sunak to strip Stewart of the Conservative Party whip. During the trial, Stewart defended his comments as a response to feeling provoked and maintained they were not racially motivated.
