Madras HC: No Right to Advocate Eradication of Ideology

No one has the right to propagate divisive ideas and hold meetings to advocate the “abolition” of any ideology, the Madras HC has said and wondered why no police action was taken against DMK ministers and functionaries who attended the September meet where calls rang out to “eradicate” Sanatan Dharma. Justice G Jayachandran has said this in an October 31 order while refusing to order Chennai police to grant permission for a meeting to “eradicate Dravidian ideology”. This meet was planned purportedly as a counter to the September 2 meet where CM MK Stalin’s son and DMK minister Udhayanidhi Stalin had issued the call to “eradicate” Sanatan Dharma. “Co-existence of multiple and different ideologies is the identity of this country. No one can expect courts to aid them to propagate ideas to create ill-will among the public. Some members of the ruling party and ministers participated in the meeting held for eradicating Sanatan Dharma and no action has been taken by the police against them, which is dereliction of duty on the part of the police,” Justice Jayachandran said in his judgment. The judge pointed out that permission had now been sought for a meeting to counter the anti-Sanatan call by targeting Dravidian ideology.
