The authorities in Pulwama, Kashmir have announced a 96-hour internet shutdown in two areas of the region. The shutdown has been implemented to prevent any potential decline in public order, although the specific reason for the shutdown has not been disclosed. The Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017 have been invoked by the security agencies to enforce the shutdown. The affected areas in Pulwama will experience the shutdown from November 5 to November 8, 2023. The security agencies have expressed concerns that mobile data services could be exploited by anti-national elements or miscreants, leading to a deterioration in public order. The Jammu & Kashmir Home department has stated that the decision was necessary to safeguard the sovereignty, integrity, and security of India and maintain public order. In recent years, area-specific internet restrictions have been enforced in Kashmir following the removal of the region’s special constitutional position in 2019.
