EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — Eglin kicked off its Native American Indian Heritage Month celebration with the 35th Annual Thunderbird Intertribal Powwow at the Niceville Festival Grounds from November 3 to 5. The event aims to recognize and honor intertribal cultures, while educating the public about the heritage, history, art, and traditions of the American Indian and Alaska Native people. The Thunderbird Intertribal Powwow is the largest and longest running Air Force-sponsored powwow, featuring authentic Native American drummers, singers, dancers, storytellers, craft makers, and more. Tribal representatives from various tribes across the U.S. gather to share their unique cultures with attendees, showcasing different regalia, colors, beadwork, and dress significant to each tribe’s history. The event was attended by Col. Tom Tauer, the 96th Test Wing deputy commander, who highlighted the enduring legacies of the indigenous peoples who have shaped and continue to influence the military and the world in profound ways.
