The Kerala High Court has instructed the State government to provide information regarding whether Ayyenkuzhi near Ambalamugal in Ernakulam has been designated as an industrial area and if there are any restrictions on property use for residents living between the properties of BPCL and HOCL. The court’s directive came in response to a contempt of court petition filed by 40 residents seeking relocation due to severe pollution and property restrictions impeding their rights. The Chief Secretary submitted that there was no evidence warranting relocation and that pollution tests conducted showed the area was free of toxic pollution. However, further study is required to conclusively determine if air pollution exceeds permissible limits. The government requested three more months to conduct the test. Additionally, the court has enlisted the Central Pollution Control Board to independently or in collaboration with the government’s expert committee, conduct further tests.
