There is no outbreak of Zika virus in Bengaluru, health authorities announced Saturday after the samples sent to National Institute of Virology in Pune tested negative. Officials confirmed that none of the 30 samples collected from Bengaluru and Chikkaballapur districts tested positive for the mosquito-borne virus. Karnataka had been on high alert after a sample from a pool of mosquitoes in Chikkaballapur was reported to have tested positive for Zika. “The human serum samples of three fever cases and 24 antenatal clinic surveillance ones among pregnant women in Chikkabalapura district tested negative for the virus,” health commissioner D Randeep told STOI. Additionally, three more samples – one suspected case and two contacts from JP Nagar in Bengaluru – were sent for testing, and they too were negative, said Dr Mahmood Shariff, state programme officer in charge of National Center for Vector Borne Diseases Control. Dr Shariff said in the JP Nagar case, the doctor suspected one patient to have symptoms of Zika, and hence, he and his two contacts were tested.
