A senator from the Netherlands’ Party for Freedom was appointed Friday to investigate possible governing coalitions in the aftermath of the far-right party’s election victory. The Party for Freedom (PVV), led by veteran anti-Islam lawmaker Geert Wilders, won 37 seats in the 150-seat lower house, signifying a significant shift to the right. Rutte’s People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) won 24 seats, 10 fewer than the previous election. PVV Senator Gom van Strien was appointed to investigate possible coalitions, while Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius, the new leader of VVD, stated they would support a center-right cabinet but not join the government. Wilders called this decision disappointing, and now he needs to convince potential partners to tone down his anti-Islam policies.
