The ministry of external affairs (MEA) has strongly denied a media report claiming that it issued a secret memo to Indian missions in North America, seeking “concrete measures” against Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Nijjar was shot dead in June this year. The MEA spokesperson stated that such reports are fake and completely fabricated, asserting that there is no such memo. He added that the report is part of a sustained disinformation campaign against India.

The MEA official also criticized the outlet, The Intercept, that published the report, stating that it is known for propagating fake narratives peddled by Pakistani intelligence. He pointed to the posts of the authors that confirm this linkage, stating that those who amplify such fake news only do so at the cost of their own credibility.

In September, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made an allegation of a “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani extremist Nijjar on Canadian soil on June 18. The Indian High Commission in Canada has asked the Canadian government to produce evidence regarding Nijjar’s killing.
