Torrential rains have pummelled the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, causing widespread flooding and damage. The heavy rainfall, which started on Sunday, December 17, 2023, has led to an unprecedented amount of precipitation in the region. Several areas, including Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Tenkasi, have recorded historical levels of rainfall. Kayalpattinam in Thoothukudi district received a staggering 95 cm of rainfall in just 24 hours. The rains were triggered by a cyclonic circulation over the Comorin area and its neighborhood. Other areas that recorded heavy rainfall include Tiruchendur, Srivaikuntam, and Moolaikaraipatti. The Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted that heavy to very heavy rains may continue in four districts on Monday: Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Tenkasi. Rains may reduce from Tuesday. Weather blogger, the Tamil Nadu Weatherman, has noted that this is the second-highest rainfall in the region since 1992.
