Pakistan’s Supreme Court has granted post-arrest bails to jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan and ex-foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi in a cipher case linked to the alleged leaking of state secrets. The bails were granted against surety bonds of 1 million Pakistani rupees each. Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s release from jail seems imminent, while Imran Khan will have to stay behind bars as he is currently on judicial remand in a corruption case related to a land scam. Despite the bail, Imran remains disqualified from contesting the general elections due to his conviction in a graft case. However, he has filed nomination papers for the upcoming elections. The Election Commission of Pakistan has rejected Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) organisational elections and plea to have the cricket bat as its symbol for the elections. This decision has resulted in Gohar Khan, a close aide of Imran, losing his position as the chairman of PTI. PTI can now either challenge this decision in the Supreme Court or field its candidates as independents. It can also choose to ally with another party and allow its candidates to use the symbol of that party for the elections.
