Nine women workers of Coimbatore-based KPR Mill, an integrated textile unit, were selected to play at the national-level throwball matches. The women are among the 1,500 workers of KPR who are trained in different sports. While three women played for Tamil Nadu, six others played for Puducherry. The Tamil Nadu team won the final match against Chhattisgarh on December 29, 2023. The mill employs 28,000 women in eight manufacturing facilities. It helps about 7,000 of them pursue higher education, apart from those giving them training in sports. Physical directors employed by the mill train the workers for four hours a day, and every three months, intra-mill matches are held in throwball, ko-ko, shuttle, and kabadi. K. Somasundaram, Vice President of KPR Mill, expressed pride in the workers’ recognition and their representation of national-level teams, mentioning the potential for future government job opportunities. Karthick, a physical trainer at the mill, highlighted the potential of the young women and the company’s support in facilitating their participation in events conducted by local clubs. Vaishnavi, a worker at the mill, balances her eight-hour shift with two-hour training sessions both in the morning and evening, representing Tamil Nadu’s throwball team as its vice captain. Deepika, another mill worker, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be recognized for her talent in throwball, which she wouldn’t have had if she had stayed at home. The success of these workers highlights the support and opportunities provided by KPR Mill.
