The Bandra police arrested three persons, including a woman, in connection with the murder of social worker Francis Fernandes alias Shafi. Police said the murder occurred after Fernandes objected to the accused smoking, as it was bothering his family. At least two more people are likely to be arrested soon. The incident occurred late on December 27.

One of the accused, Said Iqbal Shaikh, was smoking, along with his friend, outside a store at Chapel Road, Bandra. The smoke was affecting Fernandes’ family who were standing nearby. When Francis took an objection, an argument broke out. Shaikh and his associates attacked Fernandes with a knife. He fought back but suffered serious injuries. Fernandes was later taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Police said the accused also threatened Zianne, Fernandes’ family member, with dire consequences and verbally abused her. “Two of the accused also suffered knife injuries. They have been hospitalised. They will be arrested once they are discharged,” said a police officer.

The police registered a case of murder, use of lewd gestures, and criminal intimidation. They later tracked down two of the accused, Abbas Mohammad Ali and Rehbar along with a woman. All three have been arrested. Senior officials added that in the past, Fernandes had a run-in with some of the accused during a wedding procession. They were not on good terms since then.
