The Puducherry Police have apprehended a couple from Tamil Nadu for their involvement in a scam targeting artisans in Bahour village. The accused, identified as Murugaiyan and Maheswari, are residents of Thiruvathigai village in Cuddalore district. They allegedly collected ₹250 from approximately 154 individuals in Bahour, claiming it was for their enrollment in the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana Scheme. This scheme, launched by the Central government in September last year, provides skill development programs, loans with concessional interest rates, and support for artisans and craftspeople. However, it only allows online registration through Common Service Centres. The accused misled the victims by promising assistance in enrollment, training, and loan procurement. The police have managed to recover around ₹38,000 from the perpetrators.
