The problem of solid waste management in Chennai can only be solved if every resident takes responsibility for cleaning up the city, according to the Greater Chennai Corporation commissioner, Dr. J Radhakrishnan. During a door-to-door awareness campaign in Thiruvanmiyur, the commissioner stressed the need for proper waste handling during the festival of Bhogi. He met with residents on the seaward roads of Thiruvanmiyur and urged them not to burn toxic waste but to segregate it instead. Dr. Radhakrishnan explained the dangers of burning waste such as rubber, cloths, and mats, and how it contributes to pollution. He also highlighted the importance of reducing waste sent to the Greater Chennai Corporation by encouraging waste segregation. Landfills are already overloaded with legacy waste collected over several decades, making it crucial to reduce the amount of waste being sent for disposal. The commissioner emphasized that each resident should play a role in ensuring waste is not burned and is properly segregated.
