The Health department in Alappuzha has issued an alert against mumps following a rise in the number of patients. District Medical Officer Jamuna Varghese has stated that most mumps cases have been reported among children in the district, but adolescents and adults could also contract the disease. Mumps is a contagious viral disease that causes swelling of the parotid salivary glands on one or both sides of the face. In addition to swollen glands, common symptoms include fever, headache, difficulty chewing, muscle aches, and tiredness. It is important for those experiencing symptoms to seek medical treatment promptly. The infection can affect various organs, including the brain, testicles, ovaries, and pancreas gland. If left untreated, mumps can lead to complications such as encephalitis, hearing loss, and infertility. The disease is most contagious just before the onset of gland swelling and up to six days after. It spreads easily through coughing and sneezing, so infected individuals should limit contact with others. Patients should rest and drink plenty of water until they fully recover. Children with mumps should stay home and not attend school. Most people with mumps recover fully within two weeks.
