The water level in the Jhelum river in Kashmir has reached its lowest point due to a prolonged dry spell in the region. Officials have reported that the river is flowing at -0.75 feet at Sangam and -0.86 feet at Asham, which is the lowest recorded water level in the river. This lack of water is causing concern for the officials. Kashmir has been experiencing a dry spell this winter, with little snowfall and a 79% rainfall deficit in December. In the first half of January, there has been no precipitation in most parts of the valley. The Gulmarg ski resort, which is usually covered in snow, is currently dry. The plain areas of Kashmir have not received any snowfall, while the upper reaches have received less than the usual amount. The dry weather has also resulted in an increase in bushfires in hilly areas across the valley. The Forest Department has issued an advisory to people living in forest areas to prevent fires.
