Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Monday announced that her party will not enter into any pre-poll alliance for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. However, she did express openness towards a post-poll alliance. Mayawati cited past experiences where alliances did not benefit BSP and resulted in losses. She stated that most parties in the country sought an alliance with BSP, but the party would fight the elections independently.
Mayawati’s announcement comes after the BSP’s alliance with Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Despite a vote share of 19.26%, BSP won only 10 seats, while SP managed to secure just 5 seats with a vote share of 17.96%. The Congress party criticized Mayawati’s decision and emphasized the need for opposition parties to unite against the BJP, which received only around 37.8% of the votes.
Mayawati also addressed retirement rumors, clarifying that she intends to continue working for the betterment and strengthening of her party. She mentioned her previous declaration of Akash Anand as her political successor and reassured party members that she has no plans of retiring from politics.
Looking ahead to the 2024 elections, Mayawati urged party leaders and workers to work diligently and contribute their full strength to ensure a favorable verdict for BSP. In the 2022 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, BSP won just 1 seat but managed to secure a vote share of nearly 13%.
