A Marathoner Guided by Sound, Not Sight

A Marathoner Guided by Sound, Not Sight

Mohammed Asif Iqbal, a blind marathon runner, is ready to take on the Tata Mumbai Marathon, running a distance of 21km. Iqbal expresses gratitude for the courage to run and is amazed that he has come this far. His buddy runners, Jay Mali and Prakash Singh, will guide him along the route using only their voices. What sets Iqbal apart from other visually challenged runners is that he will not have any physical assistance or be bound by a bandana. This unique approach to running blindfolded stems from his rejection by the Limca Book of Records. Iqbal has been running for seven years, initially holding the elbow of a sighted person until he gained the confidence to run independently. The honk of a vehicle or the sound of a car engine used to scare him, but now he feels like a free bird. Iqbal’s running achievements include credits in the Asia Book of Records and India Book of Records. Last year, he completed the half marathon in 3 hours 19 minutes and aims to finish it in 2 hours 45 minutes this year. He aspires to set a Guinness World Record by completing a full marathon next year.
