Stepping up preparations for the Lok Sabha polls, Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann met in Delhi to deliberate on the selection of candidates for the state. The timing of the meeting gains significance as it comes amid intense speculation over the unlikelihood of AAP and Congress reaching a seat-sharing agreement in Punjab. While there was no official word on the outcome of the meeting, sources said the issue of whether the party should contest all 13 seats in the state was raised by some of those who attended the meeting. Saturday’s meeting was cited as a preliminary one. A follow-up meeting where the strategy will be finalized is expected soon, sources said. The leadership also discussed the strengths of the organization on the ground in the state and areas that need focus. AAP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha and Sandeep Pathak attended the meeting held at Arvind Kejirwal’s official residence. Some senior leaders from Delhi and Punjab unit were also present. The party leaders are, however, tight-lipped on the possibility of a pact on seat-sharing with Congress. TOI reported on Saturday that even as Congress and AAP are in talks for jointly contesting the Lok Sabha polls, indications are that an alliance in Punjab is facing serious opposition from state units of both Congress AAP unit, and that an agreement may be unlikely. The Punjab unit of Congress believes that ceding ground to AAP could seriously hurt the party’s prospects in the state as the two players are likely to remain as key opponents in future with the Akalis and BJP still recovering from break-up in their ties. Sources said prospects of a seat-sharing arrangement are bright in Delhi where all 7 Lok Sabha constituencies are currently with BJP. AAP is in power in both Delhi and Punjab.
